From Handheld Weather Forecasters to Personal UV Monitors, Oregon Scientific has taken the lead in producing weather stations and monitors for consumer use.

Oregon Scientific

Founded in Portland, Oregon, this technology company was the first to offer a consumer digital thermometer in 1982. It also produced the first electronic weather station in 1990. The company now develops a successful line of weather stations, from the upscale weather stations with voice control to the more simple Weather Hub. The Oregon Scientific brand "is becoming the world's leading designer and marketer of upscale lifestyle electronic products" (Oregon Scientific, 2006). Oregon Scientific devices use the U.S. Atomic Clock radio waves, making the devices ideal for the outdoors and emergency situations. Several of the weather products offered by Oregon Scientific include

  • Handheld Weather Forecaster - This unit is roughly the size of a cell phone, making it easy to get 12-24 hour weather forecasts and current weather conditions. This device also receives alerts for severe weather conditions and warnings. These handy devices can monitor barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, dew point, altitude, heat index, UV index, wind speed and more.

  • Emergency Alert Systems - Emergency portable weather radios, freeze alarms and public alert weather stations are all avialable from Oregon Scientific. The emergency portable weather radios are perfect for hiking, camping, hunting and other outdoor activities. The alerts are received by the National Weather Services, available in all areas of the U.S. The public alert weather stations receive all area warnings and watches from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA. This station comes with rechargeable batteries. These products range from $49.95 to $149.95.

  • Professional Weather Stations - Most weather stations available include thermometer, humidity senor, UV index and many other options. The ultra-violet index sensor collects UV data, giving messages for UV exposure risks. Oregon Scientific also offers wireless weather stations and complete weather stations.
  • Wireless Weather Stations - Wireless weather stations can receive data from up to 300 feet from the weather station. The complete weather station lists a 12-24 hour weather forecast. The remote sensors are run by solar energy, with batteries for back-up power. With the ease of no cords and wires, wireless weather stations display everything from rainfall amounts to the moon phases. With these stations, alarms can be set for certain weather conditions, such as when a certain temperature is reached or a wind speed.

  • Rain Gauges - These rain gauges come with a 9 day rainfall amount memory, for comparing rainfall amounts from day to day, especially popular in the Northwest U.S. The gauge also displays total rainfall. An automatic self-emptying rain collector makes this unit lowmaintenance.

  • Personal UV Monitor with Exposure Timer - This device monitors UV exposure while outdoors in the garden or during physical activities, complete with a countdown timer. The UV monitor uses UV, SPF and skin type to determine sun exposure times.
